of paper and envelopes purchased by PRT are FSC® or PEFC certified1⁴ ⁴ The remaining 4% is due exclusively to urgent procurement needs. For many years, PRT has sent all paper production waste for recycling. However, it uses only a minimal amount of recycled paper compared to its overall production. There are several reasons for the limited use of recycled paper as a raw material. First, the availability of recycled paper is limited. It is mainly used in the packaging sector, which is characterised by “single-use” consumption, where recycled paper finds its ideal application. In addition, demand for recycled paper in packaging exceeds supply, making recycled paper more expensive than virgin fibre paper in the graphic printing sector. Second, the final quality of paper is a crucial factor. Compared to virgin fibre paper, recycled paper is less robust and may lead to greater processing difficulties in high-volume printing and enveloping systems. Furthermore, the darker colour of recycled paper compared to the natural white of virgin fibre can significantly influence customer choice. Producing white recycled paper requires the use of chemical agents, making it preferable to use paper with a higher percentage of virgin fibre in order to reduce negative environmental impacts. Despite these factors, we are committed to increasing the use of recycled paper in the future by raising awareness and working with our customers and partners to achieve this objective. These elements contribute to the fact that the procurement of recycled graphic paper represents only 13% of the total paper used1 ³. ³ https://it.twosides.info/IT/la-deforestazione-e-un-problema-che-dobbiamo-conoscere/ Does PRT use recycled paper? 96% +9% European forest area over the last 30 years -42% 80% 92,5% CO₂e emissions in the paper industry over the last 20 years of Italian paper production covered by high-efficiency cogeneration x7 maximum number of recycling cycles for paper fibres recycling rate for paper-based packaging in Italy Page 64 Sustainability Report 2024
