vs The cliché: Paper is only waste to be disposed of The reality: Paper is the most recycled material in Europe Paper is the most recycled material in Europe, and in 2023 Italy achieved a recycling rate for paper and cardboard packaging above 90%, reaching the EU 2030 target seven years ahead of schedule. Paper can be recycled up to seven times, and the Italian paper sector now uses more than 60% recycled fibre in the fibre used by Italian paper mills, with the remaining share made up of FSC® and PEFC-certified virgin fibres. In order to maintain the quality of recycled material, it is still necessary to integrate virgin fibres sourced from sustainably managed forests. Virgin and recycled fibres are not alternatives, but complementary, and both are essential in a circular economy. When used responsibly and in balance, these two materials contribute to a sustainable future for the entire sector, making paper a strong example of circularity and raw material regeneration. PRT S.p.A. contributes to this virtuous cycle by placing printed paper and envelopes on the market that are easy to recycle. In addition, we recycle 96% of our waste internally and are committed to raising awareness among customers and end consumers on the correct disposal of our products. However, we recognise that the recycling supply chain presents challenges, such as the quality of recycled fibres and the need for investment in innovative technologies. Addressing these critical issues is essential to maximise environmental benefits and ensure a sustainable production cycle.
