92 PRT GROUP /SUSTAINABILITY REPORT 2021 1. Digital creation The first phase takes place at the IT Department and Photocomposition Department. Files are processed in the customer’s digital format: the print file in one department, variable data in the other one – the latter is information that changes depending on the document, such as the receiver’s address. For some kinds of works, the latter phase is not carried out; as a matter of fact, customers may request two identical printed products with no customization. 2. Preparing plates For works that require the use of traditional Offset printing, the file created by the Photocomposition Department is replicated on the aluminum plates. 3. Printing During this phase, the two main materials get in the game, that is, paper and inks. So, the file created during the photocomposition phase is printed onto a paper reel - in the case of digital printing – or on a pre-processed plate in case of Offset printing. Energy: consumption is referred to the machines engraving the photosensitive plate. Waste: - aluminum is sold to a specialized company which takes charge of recycling. - Spent developing solutions are delivered to a specialized company which takes charge of disposal. Energy: consumption is referred to the printing machines used. Waste: - Both certified and non-certified paper is sold to a specialized company which takes charge of recycling. - Ink and wetting solutions deriving from Offset printing are delivered to a specialized company which takes charge of disposal. Emissions: Both printing types generate emissions in the atmosphere, the so-called Volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are contained in the used materials. This type of emissions is reduced though a system of activated carbon filters that is changed every 900 hours. Authorization is provided by the Province of Turin. Inspections21 are carried out every three years by the company Sicurezza Lavoro. 21 The company in charge takes samples of emitted smoke. They must be under the value of 10mg per cubic meter, in compliance with the norms issued by the Province of Turin. Energy: consumption is referred to the use of computers in the two departments.
